the preparation

Sleep - Food - Water

The basic needs that must be covered are the basic needs of a normal person who either resides in the city, or mountain, or travelling remain the same. A safe shelter, food and water are the three aspects that must be covered thoroughly during preparation.

A roof top tent (AIRTOP by Maggiolina range) will host us in the national parks, deserts and will allow us to camp almost anywhere.About food, we plan to use our whole set of pots, pans and other funny stuff that we use while camping the last 20 years (3kg gas bottle etc). Also, the portable refrigerator indelB TB42 will keep water & beers cool. The high tech carbon filter Katadyn Combi will ensure that we always drink fresh and clean water where circumstances do not permit it.

Orientation & Navigation

We will make use of GPS devices Mio Moov 560 & Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx mainly using the Tracks4Africa maps. We will also use Michelin maps of Africa (741,745,746). To keep record of our route and location we will make use of the device Spot Satellite GPS Messenger.

You can also download City Navigator Maps for Garmin devices for North, Central & South America as well as more dedicated maps for Canada, USA and Mexico. Just hit the link.

Photo & video

One Olympus SP500UZ 6.0MP, two Minoltas (SRT 101 & SRT 202), some telephotos and wide-angle lenses (50mm, 35mm-200mm, 28mm-80mm with macro) and a Canon Legria FS200E will help to capture all moments, scenes and unique pictures we will encounter.

Travel documents

Passports and a travel insurance are all necessary. We decided to trust the English company RoundTheWorldInsurance which will cover us for a year in all the countries we plan to visit. Regarding the car, the issuing of Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) plus international driving licenses are mandatory. As for the insurance, its easy to shop at the borders as we read in other travellers reports and blogs.

Pharmacy & Vaccinations

The first aid kit will contain anything deemed necessary in such a mission. Malaria pills is a MUST! Regarding the necessary vaccinations before departure, that includes: tetanus, polio, hepatitis A & B, cholera, typhus, yellow fever & meningitis.

Power supply on the road

Our supply of power will be covered by a hand made solar system which consists of a P/B 80 watt panel, an inverter of 12-220volt COTEK SK700-212 700watt, a deep charge EXIDE GEL 85Ah battery and a charge regulator MPPT 10A, which will provide us with enough energy to recharge our batteries and operate smoothly all our electrical devices (laptop, refrigerator, lamps, etc.).

Other equipment

70 lt water tank, 67 lt fuel tank, shovel, saw, axe, rechargeable torches, set of rechargeable batteries, mosquito net, compass, anti-theft steering, air compressor, fire extinguishers, snatch block, tire repair kit, tow straps (10m, 5m & amp; 2m), work gloves, shackles, chairs & camping table, binoculars, rope, funnel, complete set of tools, etc.

Charity

We decided to implement any action without intermediaries! Purchased hundreds of stationery (notebooks, pencils, sharpeners & erasers) which we plan to distribute to any countries we will feel they need it.

Useful resources

Undoubtedly, the Africa Overland Network with innumerable information of similar trips and the renowned travel guides Africa Overland (Bradt Travel Guides), Africa Travel Guide (Lonely Planet) and Sahara Overland (Chris Scott) are some of the resources we trusted in our preparation. Horizons Unlimited (or HUBB) provided with some exceptional and extremely up-to-date information as well.

The World Off Road adventure of Greeks Akis Temberidis & Voula Netou who travelled around the world on a 4x4 gave us plenty of information, inspiration and ideas. The stories of GoDimitris (aka Dimitris Parousis) in South America inspired and motivated us to pursue our dream without any fear or hesitation.

The Greek Vitara Club contains abundant material about our car and all its members have literally fallen on us to provide any help and advice.

Finally, Ithaka of Costa Cavafy was the best guide and was there in every difficulty, negative thinking or hitch. This poem was the best "yeast" for this trip and the lyrics will accompany us at every step.
